Darren, Does My Boat Really Need to be Waxed?

The easy answer is YES!

Just like car paint, the gel coat or fiberglass of your boat needs protection from the elements just like anything else. Wax and sealants to your boat, is like sunblock to your skin. These products create an invisible layer of protection that cannot be seen, but does work! This question really leads us into the more appropriate question:

What Product Actually Works?

The best boat wax is really not a wax product at all. While much confusion exists when it comes to this area of boat care and auto detailing, it all comes down to the science of synthetic polymers. It is through advances in chemical engineering that science has created these advanced polymers that create much stronger bonds at a molecular level, than traditional wax based products can. Because of these superior bonds that are created, synthetic polymers will outlast wax based products 10 to 1! This means that when talking durability and protection, synthetic polymers are the best boat wax that can be had.

Are Marine Grade Waxes the Best Boat Wax?

Just like every other area of life, the car care and boat care industry are all screaming for your attention to sell more and more product. Through unscrupulous advertising and marketing, we are forever at the mercy of these companies all trying to push their version of best boat wax onto us. In order to gain clarity on this confusing subject, we need to establish a foundation of rules that must be applied:

• Synthetic polymer technology is the ultimate in durability and protection.
• Most companies make a version of these synthetic sealants.
• If the product is made with 100% synthetic ingredients, then it is officially called a sealant, and not a wax. Despite the fact that the manufacturer may still label it as a wax product.
• Many hybrid blends exist today combining synthetic polymers, silicone's, and waxes. For the ultimate in protection, stick with a true 100% synthetic sealant.

Darren, What About These Cleaner Waxes?

Cleaner waxes such as boat or RV cleaner wax is really like a multi-purpose product; you combine two steps into one. There are numerous cleaner waxes available including some polymers with cleaners added to the formulation. The reality is that most boats and RV's are required to be stored outdoors; subject to continuous assault from the elements. For this reason, most boats and RV's will have some level of oxidation. Trying to apply some form of wax or sealer right over oxidized fiberglass or gel coat will be problematic. As gel coat and fiberglass oxidizes, it takes on a dry and chalky appearance as the dead material forms a layer on the surface of the gel coat or fiberglass. This dead layer must either be removed as a separate step prior to applying the wax or sealer, or it must be removed during the same process of application; this is where cleaner waxes or sealants come into play. These multi-purpose products can be very effective in the removal of mild forms of oxidation.

Since I am always asked, I do actually us the Meguiar's product on a regular basis professionally. Just like every other product I have used of theirs; they work! I find their version of synthetic sealer so easy to use, I definitely consider it one of my personal best boat wax choices! This product is equally easy to use in direct sunlight also. Also effective on cars of any color when durability of protection is your first priority.

Boats with Mild Oxidation

If you are dealing with a boat or RV with mild oxidation, then your choice as the best boat wax will be a wax or sealer with some cleaners formulated into them. The two below will be good choices you can use by hand or machine.

If you are dealing with mild oxidation on your boat or RV, either one of the above products will work for you. Each of these products can be used either by hand or machine. When it comes to cleaner waxes and sealants, you have two choices here between an actual wax product, or a polymer sealant product. Regardless of the product you choose, simply apply using an applicator pad with some "bite" to it in the form of texture; like a cloth applicator pad. On most boats and RV's with oxidation, you can almost plan on having to go over each section more than once to remove all layers of oxidation. The good news is that you get to control how much effort you are willing to put in, and the end result will be in direct proportion to the amount of time and effort you put in.
