Car Wax or Boat Wax?

Let's start with the basics and work our way from there. Many people want to know if there really is a difference between car wax and gel coat wax. This is actually a complicated question since the answer is not really going to be answering your ultimate question which is, "What is the best wax to use for my boat?" Since boats are made using fiberglass and gel coat, these questions usually and up being one and the same. As a general rule, and car wax product is suitable for use as a gel coat or fiberglass wax. Any car wax product will protect your fiberglass or gel coat, just as it will protect your car paint.

Should I be Looking for Wax or Sealant?

This is where we really start solving the problem to our question, "What is the best wax for my boat?" Or more specifically, which is the best gel coat wax? The answer is that the best wax for your boat, or RV, or car, when it comes to durability and protection is not a wax at all, but a sealant. Sealants are different from wax products in that they are usually made using all synthetic ingredients. Of course this doesn't mean the industry will follow its own guidelines by being consistent; many manufacturers continue to mislabel their products which only adds to the confusion. Sealants are where you are going to find the ultimate in protection using what is usually referred o as polymer technology.

With advances in chemical engineering, man can formulate synthetic ingredients with the ability to create bonds at sub-atomic levels that are far superior to the bonds created naturally with natural waxes and other ingredients. These superior bonds will outlast other natural products like carnauba based car waxes by 10 to 1. So when it comes to the ultimate in protection and durability, 100% synthetic sealants are the place to look. They are also commonly packaged and marketed as the following:

Meguiar's #20 Polymer Sealant

While this product is not titled much differently than the #21 above, this product does contain mild chemical cleaners for use on boats and RV's with very mild levels of oxidation. If this is the case of your situation, I would go with this product.

Many RV and boat owners are dealing with mild to moderate levels of oxidation. So a traditional gel coat wax or sealant will not be ideal.
