Doesn't matter what you call it, cleaning spilt milk from your car is no fun for anyone. Whether you have a big or little milk spill in car, there are some simple tricks you can use to help guarantee success.

Why You Will Fail

Cleaning spilled milk from your car, or baby seat in your car, seems basic and straight forward to most; as it almost is. The problem is the fact that cleaning liquid spills are different than cleaning other types of dirt from your car. Everyone, including yourself, will underestimate just how deep and far liquid spills of any kind will travel, and you will not do an adequate job.

Liquids will travel to areas you do not realize because you cannot see the spilled liquid.
Liquids will travel to areas you will not be able to get to.
Liquids absorb into porous materials like carpeting and fabrics.
Liquids will "wick" from one material to the next.

Where is That Smell Coming From?

Because milk is harmless by nature, most people will try to clean up these spills themselves. But spilled milk in car becomes a festering mess due to remaining spillage you either didn't realize was there, or could not get to. So within a few days, or a single day in hot climates, you get into your car where immediately, you are engulfed with the most nauseating, putrid smell you think you have ever smelled! In fact, it is so bad, your mind starts racing wondering who could have thrown up in your car; until you suddenly connect the dots and remember the milk spill you tried to clean within your car days earlier.

Help from the Expert

Unlike the bigger, open areas of our houses where milk spills often happen, spilled milk in car becomes much more difficult due to the many materials, crevices, nooks, and crannies of a typical car interior. As noted earlier, one of the biggest problems is being able to see every place the spilled milk has traveled. Follow the steps below to ensure better milk spill clean-up results:

Investigation work

When milk gets spilled, it blends into materials and carpeting rather well, so it is difficult to actually see the spill like you would if it was a bright colored liquid, or a chunky type of liquid. Cleaning spilled milk in car starts out with the critical step of identification; you can't clean an area if you think there is no milk spillage there. If it doesn't get cleaned, it will smell later!

Clean up begins

There are a few ways you can clean spilled milk from your car; each of which will be determined by the material and access to the spill area.

Upholstery, fabric, carpeting, etc.

Use home carpet extractor like the Little Green Machine for the areas where access of the cleaning head is possible.
Remove floor mats for cleaning of the floor mats, as well as underneath floor mats.
Remember that front seats can be moved far forward, or far back to access spills.
Lift and fold rear seating out of way depending on areas of spilled milk in car.

Hard surfaces, plastics, door panels, etc.

When it comes to the hard surfaces of your car and cleaning the spilled milk from these areas, you need not over think this. Any traditional cleaner that is safe for carpeting and general use will due here. This step is more about being thorough than trying to find the perfect cleaner.

Mr. Clean Magic Eraser is a must have for around the house in general, and works wonders in the car also.
Old tooth brushes are great mini scrub brushes for those tight to reach areas.
Old and clean paint brushes and make-up brushes are get for dusting out the dash vents and gauges.

The Magic Weapon of Spilled Milk in Car

Cleaning spilled milk from your car is all about being thorough. Most people will fail because of these two issues:

You will not be thorough in your cleaning because you fail to track down the entire spill.
Because of porous materials, your cleaning efforts will be less then effective.

Febreze is your magic answer here. Actually, there are many products on the market that are effective for use in odor control. Visit any Pet Smart retail location and you will find an entire row of odor control sprays for use at home.

Use the anti-microbial version of any of these odor control sprays.
Use liberally on all porous materials after you have thoroughly cleaned the milk spill first.
Anti-microbial's work while they are wet, so do not worry about trying to dry the area out after application of odor control agent.
You may need to do follow-up applications until all odor causing material is eliminated.
Perfect for spraying into crevices and areas of car where you are unable to access.
Scented dryer sheets make good air fresheners; stash one under each front seat area for an all-around clean smell to your car.

Baby Car Seats

Spilled milk in car goes hand in hand with baby's and car seats. Regardless of the fool proof sippy cups that insist they won't leak, cleaning spilled milk from your car is almost a guarantee. Cleaning car seats are an annoyance, but because they are removable, you can have better results with some of the following tips:

Washing appropriate covers and padding in the clothes washer is the most ideal.
If you are unwilling to disassemble, then follow cleaning methods from above.
Most mom's and dad's underestimate how much milk or other liquids actually spill, so lingering smells often reside underneath the cloth liners of the seating areas of the baby seats.
Make sure you clean hard plastic base of baby car seat with cleaner to remove any spilled milk that may have seeped through.
Treat area after cleaning with Febreze or other odor control spray as mentioned above.
Seat belts of the car and baby car seat are especially difficult to thoroughly clean, so repeated applications of the Febreze will usually be required.

I have generally used other mobile detail services in the past and continue to do so for what I call a normal detail job. But I met Darren through Exclusive Motors as we share the same building.
